BULLYING occurs when one person intentionally,
repeatedly over time takes negative action against someone else.
Bullying happens to anyone—children,
teens, adults, seniors… ANYONE..
Bullying happens in any setting—at
school, the workplace, in class, at the office, on the playground,
at sporting events, in the home…. ANYWHERE..
Bullying takes many forms—some
examples are:
- verbal (rumors, lies, criticism, threats, harassment, etc.)
- physical (hitting, pushing, shoving, gestures, spitting, etc.)
- mental (teasing, taunting, staring/glaring [“mean mugging”]
- emotional (put downs, threats, etc.)
- social, (ignoring someone, exclusion, shunning, etc.)
- sexual (sexual comments, date rape, rape, sexual abuse, etc.)
- virtual (cyberbullying—bullying by text messages, emails,
websites),
SOME KEY INFORMATION ABOUT BULLYING:
- About 30-35% of students report being involved with bullying
at school, either by bullying others, being bullied, or both
- Bullies are 4 times as likely to have three or more (felony)
convictions by age 24
- Bullying happens in all grade levels, from pre-school to high
school, college; it happens in families, among friends and in
the workplace
- Victims/targets who are bullied suffer both short and long term
effects, including low self esteem, increased rates of depression,
thoughts of suicide and increased rates of Post Traumatic Stress
Disorder (PTSD)
